Rayburn Farms story began at North Carolina A & T State University where Lauren and Michael first meet. Lauren was studying Environmental Science and Michael Environmental Horticulture.
Long story short... they graduated, moved around, made good careers in DC, had a baby and said "bump this s**t". Michael had always wanted to try his hands at farming, and Lauren was a saint for allowing him to try (and he never forgets that!).
They were lucky to find an amazing property located at the base of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Barnardsville NC, and they made it their home. The big question lay before them: "What do we grow?"
After trying lots of different crops, they began stumbling over a trend in the local brewery scene in Asheville. A lot of brewers were playing around with different herbs in their beers -- and before they knew it, Rayburn Farms became the Brewers' Farm, growing everything from pumpkins to 6 different flavors of basil to ginger and mints.
In 2021 Michael and their son Elijah wanted to try to make their own Peppermint Hot Chocolate using Peppermint from the fields. After doing some research and drinking tons of cocoa they landed on a killer recipe. This kick started a flurry of ideas (Ginger Cocoa, Cinnamon Basil Cocoa, Turmeric Cocoa) and they decided it might be fun to sell a little cocoa on the side for fun. A few years, 10 recipes, plus several Teas added to the line up, later and Rayburn Farms is now a Hot Cocoa & Tea Blend Farm. With most of the crops they grow going towards these products. They do still grow Ginger for retail and other makers, but Cocoa and Tea are the crops now!
Michael and Lauren will be the first to tell you how blessed they are to be able to follow their dreams and that's why they feel it's important to give back and to share with the communities that have supported them.
